School History
Jane Addams Elementary School was built in 1948 to make room for the children
that had overcrowded the Gallistel and Taylor Schools. At first it served children
from Kindergarten through Grade 6; today it serves children from Pre-K through
Grade 8.
Jane Addams Elementary School was named after Jane Addams (1860-1935). She was
a woman who grew up in a wealthy family and obtained a bachelor’s degree from
Rockford Seminary. Due to poor health, she had to quit school. Jane Addams decided
to help people who were less fortunate, and she dedicated herself to this work.
Jane Addams is best known as the founder of Hull House in Chicago, one of the
most successful settlement houses. She also worked for women’s rights and peace
and has written several books on social ethics. For more information on Jane

Through the years Jane Addams has continued to grow and with this growth there
have been extensive improvements to the school.
- In 1994 a lunchroom addition was built to provide a place for the children
to eat. Formally, the auditorium/gymnasium was set up daily as a make-shift lunchroom.
- In 1996 an annex was added to alleviate the overcrowding.
- In 1998 renovations were made to the main building classrooms, such as electrical
upgrades, and improvements to the school grounds.
- In the summer of 1998 the campus park was completed adding an outdoor classroom/auditorium,
two baseball fields, two butterfly gardens and a ¼ mile track.
- In 1999 two mobiles with four classrooms were added to the school.
- In 2003 an eight classroom demountable was added to continue to meet the needs
of the growing population.
Today, Jane Addams is a school of merit. As indicated on standardized tests,
the school has been on an upward trend academically. Sixty one to sixty three
percent of the students meet and exceed state goals. A large part of this success
is due to the commitments of parents, students and teachers.
